800G vs 400G Optical Transceivers: Which Is Right for Your AI Cluster?

As AI clusters scale, the choice between 800G OSFP and 400G QSFP-DD optical transceivers becomes critical. 800G OSFP (MMA4Z00-NS-FLT, MMA4Z00-NS400) is designed for NVIDIA NDR InfiniBand switches and DGX H100/H200 clusters requiring maximum GPU-to-GPU bandwidth. 400G QSFP-DD is the cost-effective choice for smaller clusters with broad switch compatibility across Arista, Cisco and NVIDIA Spectrum.

When to Choose 800G OSFP

Choose 800G OSFP when building clusters of 1000+ GPUs on NVIDIA Spectrum-4 or Quantum-2 switches where fabric bandwidth is the bottleneck. The 2x400G per port doubles throughput vs 400G solutions.

When to Choose 400G QSFP-DD

Choose 400G QSFP-DD for clusters up to ~500 GPUs, mixed-vendor switch environments, or where cost-per-port must be minimized. The mature ecosystem means more competitive pricing and wider hardware support.
