How to Choose Compatible Optical Modules for NVIDIA Spectrum Switches

NVIDIA Spectrum switches power the largest AI Ethernet fabrics. Selecting the right optical modules is critical for performance and cost. Spectrum-2 (SN3800) works with standard 100G QSFP28 in breakout mode. Spectrum-3 (SN4600) supports 400G QSFP-DD DR4 or SR4 for short reach. Spectrum-4 (SN5600) uses 800G OSFP SR8 such as MMA4Z00-NS400 for DGX H100 clusters.

OEM vs Compatible: Cost and Risk

Original NVIDIA/Mellanox branded transceivers carry 3-5x price premium over compatible alternatives. For production AI workloads, third-party compatible modules programmed with correct vendor ID perform identically.
