AirTrunk boosts Japan presence with West Tokyo data center

AirTrunk is planning to build TOK2, a new hyperscale data center in Japan which will strengthen the company’s presence in the country.

Located in West Tokyo, AirTrunk TOK2 will have a capacity of over 110MW and become the company’s eighth data center.

Additionally, TOK2 will give the company’s platform an overall combined capacity of 1.2GW and provide location diversity for AirTrunks hyperscale customers in the Tokyo region.

AirTrunk’s existing data centers include TOK1 in Japan, as well as SYD1, SYD2, SYD3 and MEL1 in Australia, SGP1 in Singapore, and HKG1 in Hong Kong.

The new data center is strategically located in western Tokyo, servicing a significant cloud availability zone and complementing AirTrunk’s East Tokyo data center, TOK1, which opened less than six months ago.

AirTrunk is a hyperscale data center specialist creating a platform for cloud, content and large enterprise customers across the Asia-Pacific & Japan region.

The company develops and operates reliable, energy and water-efficient data center campuses.

“As Japan continues to digitalise at scale, we are seeing strong shifts in cloud adoption, with analysts projecting the country’s public cloud services market to grow 19.5% annually to 2025,” AirTrunk founder and CEO Robin Khuda says.

“Global and Japanese technology companies are focusing on Tokyo as a key growth market.

“AirTrunk’s new TOK2 hyperscale data center in West Tokyo, along with TOK1 in East Tokyo, will take our total capacity in Japan to more than 410MW, giving customers the unprecedented ability to scale and grow in the Tokyo region.

“The facility will be delivered with AirTrunk’s trademark speed, scale, reliability, and efficiency.”

The campus will be built across over 4.6 hectares (11.36 acres) of land and powered by high voltage substations using flexible designs to meet customer requirements and optimise capacity.

Furthermore, the campus will be in line with AirTrunk’s high efficiency and sustainability standards and is designed to an industry-low power usage effectiveness of 1.15, using direct air-free cooling.

“AirTrunk’s multi-billion-dollar investment into the economy will support the Japan Digital Agency’s path toward digitalisation, contributing to the country’s post-COVID recovery,” AirTrunk head of Japan Nori Matsushita says.

AirTrunk will continue to work with Japanese construction conglomerate Daiwa House Industry on the development of TOK2, as it did with TOK1.
